Beyond the Vapor

This morning on my way to work I passed over the White River near Potter's Bridge (seen at right), bordered by its autumn trees with only remnants of muted colors, and into a low cloud of surface fog so dense that I could not see more than a few hundred yards ahead. Above, the sun was shining brightly and I could see blue sky through the vapor which had enveloped me all around. The vapor was very localized and though quite dense, it was soon to be gone, driven away by the heat of the sun and the wind currents that came with the arrival of this glowing orb.

In a similar way, our lives are but a vapor (James 4:14). Our part in the grand scheme of space and time is very limited. However, when we grasp the infinite and glorious splendor of the presence of the God himself overseeing the entire journey and existing far beyond the beginning and ending our "passing vapor" of life, we are comforted, we are refreshed and we are driven forward towards the sonlight of eternity. In eternity, our physical existence will cease to be a passing vapor of limited space and time, but we will leap into a realm of indescribable and complete joy! As the Apostle Paul said, "this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison" (2 Corinthians 4:17).

It is my continued prayer that I not live for the vapor below, but for the Son above, looking beyond the vapor towards the glory that will be my eternity.
